  • Barkho Productions - Chanukah in Trafalgar Square
    Chanukah in Trafalgar Square
    Largest menorah lighting in Europe
Objective: Organising UK’s central, annual, and public celebration of the festival of Chanukah.

    The backstory

The story of Chanukah is arguably the first recorded event in history of a people winning their right to celebrate and continue their own culture in the face of fierce oppression.
At the first lighting of the menorah on Trafalgar Square in 2007, the Mayor of London said, “If ever we get tired of the name London, it actually would enshrine a lot of what makes London a great city if we renamed it Chanukah.”

In promoting an understanding of the festival and its related practices, the placement of the menorah on Trafalgar Square and the lighting ceremony are viewed by thousands of Londoners and visitors who pass through the Square. This plays an important role in the community cohesion agenda within London.

    The headache

This event is attended by 5000 people and features speeches from communal figures, as well as the Mayor of London.

    We needed to:

    create a program

    execute the program

    negotiate with suppliers

    manage budgeting

work with all partners and stakeholders

....so the event would run smoothly.

Since the Mayor of London, along with certain senior diplomats and some religious leaders would be attending, we also had to liaise with different security agencies to ensure tight security.

    The outcome

We turned the 2019 event into an afternoon family event.
The square was turned into a carnival for kids, with arts + crafts, olive oil pressing, and lots of other fun activities.

The square vibrated with maximum turnout — over 5000 people — and it was a joy-filled day for everyone.
